China’s household paper and sanitary products import and export situation in 2020

Household paper

import

In recent years, the import volume of China’s household paper market has basically continued to decrease. By 2020, the annual import volume of household paper will be only 27,700 tons, a decrease of 12.67% from 2019. Continued growth, more and more product types, have been able to fully meet the needs of consumers, household paper imports will continue to maintain a low level.

Among imported household paper, raw paper is still dominated, accounting for 74.44%. However, the total amount of imports is small, and the impact on the domestic market is small.

Export

The sudden new crown pneumonia epidemic in 2020 has had an important impact on all walks of life around the world. The increase in consumer hygiene and safety awareness has stimulated the increase in the consumption of daily cleaning products, including household paper, which is also reflected in household paper Import and export trade. Statistics show that China’s household paper exports in 2020 will be 865,700 tons, an increase of 11.12% year-on-year; however, the export value will be USD 2,25567 million, a decrease of 13.30% from the previous year. The overall export of household paper products showed a trend of increasing volume and falling prices, and the average export price dropped by 21.97% compared to 2019.

Among the exported household papers, the export volume of base paper and toilet paper products increased significantly. The export volume of base paper increased by 19.55 percent from 2019 to approximately 232,680 tons, and the volume of toilet paper exports increased by 22.41% to approximately 333,470 tons. Raw paper accounted for 26.88% of household paper exports, an increase of 1.9 percentage points from 24.98% in 2019. Toilet paper exports accounted for 38.52%, an increase of 3.55 percentage points from 34.97% in 2019. The possible reason is that due to the impact of the epidemic, the panic buying of toilet paper in foreign countries in the short term has driven the export of raw paper and toilet paper products, while the export of handkerchiefs, facial tissues, paper tablecloths, and paper napkins has shown a trend of falling both in volume and prices.

The U.S. is one of the major exporters of China’s household paper products. Since the Sino-U.S. trade war, the volume of household paper exported from China to the United States has dropped significantly. The total volume of household paper exported to the United States in 2020 is about 132,400 tons, which is higher than that. In 2019, a small increase of 10959.944t. Tissue paper exported to the United States in 2020 accounted for 15.20% of China’s total tissue exports (15.59% of total exports in 2019 and 21% of total exports in 2018), ranking third in export volume.

Hygiene products

import

In 2020, the total import volume of absorbent sanitary products was 136,400 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 27.71%. Since 2018, it has continued to decline. In 2018 and 2019, the total import volume was 16.71% and 11.10% respectively. Imported products are still dominated by baby diapers, accounting for 85.38% of the total import volume. In addition, the import volume of sanitary napkins/sanitary pads and tampon products has declined for the first time in the past three years, down by 1.77% year-on-year. The import volume is small, but both the import volume and the import value have increased.

The import volume of absorbent sanitary products has further decreased, showing that China’s domestically produced baby diapers, feminine hygiene products and other absorbent sanitary products industries have developed rapidly, which can largely meet the needs of domestic consumers. In addition, imports of absorbent hygiene products generally show a trend of falling in volume and rising prices.

Export

Although the industry has been affected by the epidemic, the export volume of absorbent hygiene products will continue to grow in 2020, increasing by 7.74% year-on-year to 947,900 tons, and the average price of products has also risen slightly. The overall export of absorbent hygiene products is still showing a relatively good growth trend.

Adult incontinence products (including pet pads) accounted for 53.31% of the total export volume. Followed by baby diapers products, accounting for 35.19% of the total export volume, the most exported destinations for baby diapers products are the Philippines, Australia, Vietnam and other markets.

Wipes

Affected by the epidemic, consumer demand for personal cleaning products has surged, and the import and export of wet wipes products have shown a trend of rising volume and price.

Import

In 2020, the import volume of wet wipes changed from a decrease in 2018 and 2019 to an increase of 10.93%. The changes in the import volume of wet wipes in 2018 and 2019 were -27.52% and -4.91%, respectively. The total import volume of wet wipes in 2020 is 8811.231t, an increase of 868.3t compared with 2019.

Export

In 2020, the export volume of wet wipes products increased by 131.42%, and the export value increased by 145.56%, both of which doubled. It can be seen that due to the spread of the new crown pneumonia epidemic in overseas markets, there is a higher demand for wet wipes products. Wet wipes products are mainly exported to the US market, reaching about 267,300 tons, accounting for 46.62% of the total export volume. Compared with the total amount of wet wipes exported to the U.S. market in 2019, the total amount of wet wipes products reached 70,600 tons, an increase of 378.69% in 2020.
